I did the 1-7 exercises of the How God Changes Your Brain and realized that it was quite a lot. So I decided to save the last 5 for tomorrow.
Here are my reflections on the exercises:
1. Breathing awareness. I realize breathing is essential but somehow I find it the least appealing exercise. I particularly resent the "watch how it feels" -request. I do not know why. I understand that breathing is the single most important factor in one´s mental and spiritual healing process and it is precisely because I am a bit annoyed by it that I need to do it more. So - every day from now on I will start my evening meditation with it.
2. Yawning. I love it! I love yawning and totally get how beneficial it is. I will do it every day, as a separate practice!
3. The relaxation response. I chose the word "Love" as my mantra but later it changed into "Universe" - which seems to be my favorite word these days. It somehow reflects the abundance of the world and how good only keeps expanding. Mantra meditation is not easy for me - I would prefer being completely silent and without thought - but I did manage to do this for the recommended 20 minutes. Maybe it becomes easier with practice.
I love chanting, though, so maybe I could do mantra chanting?
4.Progressive muscle relaxation. Wonderful! The relaxed state afterwards felt divine! I will definitively do this regularly!
5. Visualization. I love the idea of a "mini-holiday". To have your very own private sanctuary where to escape where ever you are, is great. I will do this whenever a negative thought tries to penetrate my mind. It will give me a sense of freedom like nothing else - like the external circumstances had no power over me but I could fly with my winds of imagination wherever!
6. Candle meditation. Sweet! Candle light is mesmerizing and in this winter darkness it gives you comfort. My house is full of candles. This meditation is something to be done now and then, maybe not every day.
7. The centering prayer. I had a little difficulty to see the difference between mantra meditation and this one. I chose the line "I get what I am" (from the Law of Attraction literature) but after a while it naturally changed into Freedom. I contemplated the sense of freedom for 20 minutes and it was exactly what I needed. I need to break free from the past, particularly my husband, and also from the relationship I am having to another man. I realized I do not need either but am complete and whole being just me. I have had problems with co-dependancy and it is miraculous to start feeling the freedom that comes with the notion of self-sufficiency! No one can ever have power over me, ever again! I feel like an eagle flying over the hill tops!
